February 7, 2009 (Spotlight on 1st time dancers)
March 7, 2009 (Spotlight on neo-tribal dances)
April 4, 2009
A Hafla is a Middle Eastern dance party. We have solo and group performances. The dancers may be students, professionals, or anyone in between.
This year we will spotlight special themes at some of the haflas. So if you have an ethnic dance, sign up for the December hafla, or bring your comedy act to the January one. Plan your first-time performance for the February hafla or your neo-tribal act for March. But we won’t be limited to the spotlight theme, all dancers and all styles are welcome are welcome.
We usually have time for drumming and social dancing after the performances.
If you want to watch, just show up. It is free, but we do pass the hat to pay the rent.
If you want to perform, contact one of the people listed below at least a day before the hafla. We want to be sure there is time for all the performers. We suggest that performances be about 5-6 minutes long. Also, if you plan multiple performances, for instance a solo and a troupe dance, please discuss this with one of us before the hafla. Depending on the number of performances scheduled, we may ask you to defer one dance to the next hafla.
The Haflas are sponsored by the Pratt Community Ed Belly Dance Program.

Raks al Assaya, also known as Egyptian Cane Dance, is a folkloric dance that comes from Said, a region of Upper Egypt.
Prop dances are a fun change of pace and this one comes from Egypt’s pastoral tradition. It is also a coquettish parody of the men’s martial arts stick dance, tah’tyb.
Aliyah will be sharing her knowledge and technique acquired during her studies while visiting Egypt. This workshop will cover basic to intermediate techniques with sassy, flirtatious, and fun moves, both traditional and contemporary.
Please bring a cane if you have one. If you do not have one the instructor will have plenty of extra canes available for students to borrow as well.
