Description:

Dynamic drum solos are key to many belly dance shows--whether to live or prerecorded music. But, when working with live musicians, the interplay of dance and music takes on a life of its own! In this class we'll explore techniques and tips for creating dynamic drum solo performances. We'll also address some basic issues in working with live musicians and explore rhythm changes and "signals" between drummers and dancers. A seasoned drum solo performer, Mirah has worked with many live bands and percussion ensembles in both rehearsed and "pick up" situations, and for this class she is joined by Dave Lake, local tabla player.

Important notes: This class will include precise technique work and combinations as well as work with a live musician. Come ready to work hard and have fun! Be aware that we will have a male drummer in the room.

Kick off the summer with a workshop in the most exciting and innovative style of belly dance. In this mini-session, you will learn posture, movements and attitude that create this stunning style. Isolations will be taught through demonstration and verbal breakdown in an easy to follow format. The isolations will also be strung into combinations and eventually into a complete dance to great music. Each class within the session will focus on different movements and isolations while building upon the growing choreography. Sink yourself into the allure and mystery of India. This mini-session is a great way to introduce yourself to both the high energy Bhangra dance (a folk dance of Northern India/Punjab) and the free-spirited moves of Bollywood. In each class, we will work through both Bhangra and Bollywood moves and combinations building upon a complete dance. This is not a class for the slug. You will sweat! This dance will make you laugh and realize you have never had so much fun while sweating at the same time. Come with a good supportive bra, water, yoga mat (warm up and cool down will be yoga), any knee support you may need and a 'can-do' attitude because you can do it. And you WILL love it, I promise.

Gahwazee Influenced Improv
Take the dance back to its roots! Inspired by the folk
dances of Upper Egypt, Urban Gypsy brings you a "brand
new" (but really old!) vocabulary of sassy and earthy
movement combinations from their time spent with the
Gahwazee and folk dancers in Cairo last year. Hearken
back to the days of dancing in the desert with Urban
Gypsy. Don't forget your zills!

2 - 4 p.m.
Troupe Synchronicity
Learn some tricks to make different body types,
different strength levels, long legs, short legs, long
or short torsos ALL look enough alike to paint a total
picture. You will to take home some exercises to help
make you more aware of the differences and to help get
you in sync with your dance partners!

ABOUT URBAN GYPSY
Urban Gypsy has its roots in Houston, Texas ~ where
they have nurtured tribal dance and fashioned a path
for other tribal troupes to emerge and grow. Sahira
and Zymirrah are founding members of the troupe and
also serve as its leadership. In 2006, they had the
honor (& thrill!!) of being the first tribal dancers
invited to teach at Ahlan Wa Sahlan, the largest
bellydance festival in the world, in Cairo, Egypt. The
troupe consists of six incredibly talented and
dedicated dancers, passionate about bringing to life
the beauty and grace of our dance.

Gahwazee Influenced Improv
Take the dance back to its roots! Inspired by the folk
dances of Upper Egypt, Urban Gypsy brings you a "brand
new" (but really old!) vocabulary of sassy and earthy
movement combinations from their time spent with the
Gahwazee and folk dancers in Cairo last year. Hearken
back to the days of dancing in the desert with Urban
Gypsy. Don't forget your zills!

2 - 4 p.m.
Troupe Synchronicity
Learn some tricks to make different body types,
different strength levels, long legs, short legs, long
or short torsos ALL look enough alike to paint a total
picture. You will to take home some exercises to help
make you more aware of the differences and to help get
you in sync with your dance partners!

Sharp and Funky Movements with Sahira
Using funky pops, locks & intense isolations to create
a modern urban flair in your dance. Usable on the
stage or in your favorite club.

The Joy of Poi: Fireless Fire Spinning
Basic poi technique and transitions for the belly
dancer. No fire will be used in class.

ABOUT URBAN GYPSY
Urban Gypsy has its roots in Houston, Texas ~ where
they have nurtured tribal dance and fashioned a path
for other tribal troupes to emerge and grow. Sahira
and Zymirrah are founding members of the troupe and
also serve as its leadership. In 2006, they had the
honor (& thrill!!) of being the first tribal dancers
invited to teach at Ahlan Wa Sahlan, the largest
bellydance festival in the world, in Cairo, Egypt. The
troupe consists of six incredibly talented and
dedicated dancers, passionate about bringing to life
the beauty and grace of our dance.

Zymirrah & Sahira also sponsor the 3rd Coast Tribal
Dance Festival annually in in Texas. They are devoted
to bringing talented performers to the 3rd Coast and
sharing them with those eager to study our dance.

Come learn more about henna and get a chance to use it first hand.
Sarah will talk a little bit about henna and how to apply it, but most of the time, you will be playing with henna yourself.
Henna in applicator bottles will be available for everyone to use, with Sarah’s guidance, as well as a finishing seal to protect your new henna art.
Workshops are limited to 5 people.

Price is $18/ $15 with student ID.

Description:

Tara, who has 34 years of Egyptian and Greek Cabaret perfoming experinece and 72 hours of Neo-Tribal classes from Zoe, Rachel, Marti, Sharon, Kami and Ariellah, is offering a 5 week Neo-Trial conditioning and drilling class. Must have had at least 2 years of classes in Egyptian or Tribal. We will start with the basic techniques and tribialize them. Classes run from July 15 - August 12, 6:30-7:45
